Photo Lovers: www.myspace.com/misterwill 1/2/09: The first Friday of the New Year and the weather couldn't be any nicer. Dallas hosts it's Final Cotton Bowl at Fair Park before the move to Arlington in 2010. The mercury shall reach 76 and after today my dog sitting duties shall be completed. Lots of thoughts creeping into my mind... The Detroit Red Wings showed yesterday why they are the defending World Champions of the NHL. They can defeat you in so many ways. The highlight of yesterday's match with the Blackhawks at Wrigley Field was watching Pavel Datsyuk skate in between three defenders while rattling in a goal. Detroit would score five unanswered shots in a 6-4 victory over Chicago. Many dignitaries from the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls in talking up this promotion. I thought Bob Costas and Mike Milbury told the story of how the Winter Classic came to be, and I will watch again next year. Quite a few of my coworkers also watched albeit while nursing nasty hangovers... USC may very well get some BCS consideration if the Oklahoma-Florida game is a bust. I think Florida will make it a long night for the Sooners and Bob Stoops will continue to have his BCS struggles. Mark Sanchez had a great game for the Trojans. I highly doubt he will want to be drafted by the Lions in 2009 so I am on record to say he will return to USC in 2009. Can't say I blame him... Texas Tech a heavy favorite to win today over Ole Miss at the Cotton Bowl. As I told my drummer buddy Aaron,'Ole Miss will win going away.' Call it the ex-Longhorn factor with Jevan Snead, call it a sense of intuition. Houston Nutt always brings the pain defensively. I anticipate a high scoring game with a load of turnovers and special teams magic. But Ole Miss will win. This weekend the Dolphins and Chargers have playoff games to deal with. You might recall it was on this day in 1982 at the Orange Bowl that these two teams played one of the greatest playoff games of our lifetime. A 24-0 Charger lead evaporated in a 38-38 donnybrook. Remember the hook and go to Duriel Harris? Kellen Winslow caught a dozen balls and being given oxygen on the sideline. It was a warm humid Miami night. Uwe Van Schamann went wide right in the OT while Rolf Benirshke hit the game winner for a 41-38 San Diego victory. Speaking of Orange Bowls, I caught the halftime show. Damn if the Doobie Brothers still didn't have it! It felt like 1972 all over again as Tom Johnston and Skunk Baxter were handing out the primo energy in jam session style! I loved it. The 76ers are at the AAC this night. This also brings back memories for on this day in 1997, I saw Philly play at the Key Arena in Seattle, Wa. Alan Iverson was a rookie on that night and I recall one missed foul shot by A.I. where he jumped the length of the foull shot distance to slamdunk the ball in mid-air. This caused a roar throughout the arena. Tonight it will the Andre and Andre duo trying to stop the Maverick momentum movement. Take away a 2-7 start and Dallas has gone 17-5 with an ability to score and get tough in the 4th quarter. At this pace the Mavericks are a lock for a 51 win season. A win tonight might erase the taste of last week on the road. This weekends playoff games should be interesting. Only Indy will win as a road team. Otherwise go with the home teams to win and cover. GO VIKINGS!!!! That's all I have to say about that. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 1/1/09: Happy New Year! New Year's Eve was truly eventful, the Dallas Stars were aligned, and watching hockey being played at famed Wrigley Field was a rush! Here's a suggestion to Gary Betmann. If it is feasible, how about a way to have all NHL teams play outdoors on New Years Day? Oh wait, that would take away from all the ho-hum Bowl games that are supposed to be so whetting for the palette. Alas, but a thought. The Dragonfly was ROCKING last night. One thing I am adamant about is being a designated driver on New Year's Eve. There were as many cops on the road in downtown Dallas as there were in-laws at my last wedding. Translation: trouble. Dallas' finest came to party and to play. There was a Remaisance essence to the event as couples dresssed like for a 'Phantom Of the Opera' play. I was impressed. I had a glimpse ito the future...Her name was Melinda (smile). The Dallas Stars also borrowed from the Maverick playbook and played their guts out as 2008 came to an end. Riding a two game losing streak on New Year's Eve, Louie Erikkson made sure there wouldn't be a third when he hit an empty netter late to insure a 4-2 win. Erikkson also had an early goal to give Dallas eb edge they would not relinquish over the New Jersey Devils. Marty Turco was epic despite having a contact lens affect him. Two stops on Zack Parise and Patrick Elias brought the house down. Brad Richards contributed a goal and an assist. Two point collected to place the Stars closer to the #10 seed. Good news on a night that San Jose lost...Dallas enters 2009 16-15-4. Newsflash: The Texas Rangers made their big signing. Former Brewer Derrick Turnbow will now be playing at least for 2009 in Arlington. A Mike Maddux disciple, this may be of help to those who man the bullpen. This also means a trial by committee for CJ Wilson, Franky Francisco, amd Joaquin Benoit. My #1 resolution for 2009 is to get back to my ideal weight. 200. I have about 30 pounds of work to pursue as I got a little too lax as 2008 came to an end. From this day forward I am abandoning sweets and desserts until I am at that goal. Like not drinking and smoking, this will take some effort as I am a chocoholic. This will probably also mean an end to Starbucks for a spell. Totally off the track but something I will speak about. Those of you who know me are aware of how adamant I am about being sober and alive. Different people have different passions about what ignites and excites them. A friend of mine will be having a bithday on January 11th 2009 in downtown Dallas. She will remain anonymous for now. That really isn't the important part. I already told her 36 is the new 25. What is important is that on January 11th 2009, Poor David's Pub, located at 1313 S Lamar in downtown Dallas, will be the place to be. The doors will open at 7pm. There will be a ten dollar cover at the door. The cover will go along way toward a fine group of people who help those in times of trouble, in situations of domestic violence. Hope's Door. Ten years ago I roomed with the best roommate one could ever ask for in Seattle, Wa. Gail now does amazing work in Redding, California with regards to assisting shelters and empowering women. Ironically, Gail also has a January birthday and will also be turning 36. With gracious contributions from Vitality Tattoo, and with more info at www.poordavidspub.com it is the hope of this writer and his friend that this Sunday night in downtown Dallas will be one where perhaps a yearly tradition can be started to help those (who are not aware) to be aware. Maybe help those (who aren't an advocate) to be an advocate. Violence is not love, only a perverted weakness. If awareness is the goal, then I am all for raising awareness, empowering someone who doesn't know how or have the means, and give someone a much deserved second chance. Haven't we all been there? The best part of this night on January 11th will be the play of local band Ghoultown. I have friends who play for Titan Moon and Silvertongued Devil, and I am told Ghoultown will lay the smack down musically. Lastly, I will be there! I never miss an photo opportunity. I hope to see you at Poor David's Pub on January 11th, 2009. The Dallas Cowboys are out of the playoff picture so you have no excuses. I have also been tagged. There is one New Years Eve pic that Melinda was nice enough to take on myspace. As you can see, all of a sudden I am liking the thought of the future. Happy New Year friends. Time for a walk and a nap! Over and out in Big D Mr Will
12/31/08: Alas a year comes to an end, but not without some history being made. I hope the Dallas Cowboys were watching the manner that the Dallas Mavericks overcame a 29 point deficit to overcome and handle the Minnesota T-Wolves 107-100! The AAC at games end was electric! It helps that you run off a 22-2 clip as Mav players heard boo-birds for the first time all year. The boos didn't last long unlike tonight where the booze shall flow freely! Jason Terry got the crowd to it's feet when he sank a three from the wing to lower the deficit to ten with 4 minutes left in the 3rd period. After that, you just knew that comeback was in the offing. I was there one year ago when Dallas overcamea 24 point deficit to the Toronto Raptors. Last night was special. Terry connected for 29, The Kiddster was dishing bailouts (assists) like the Government, Dirk got shots to fall late, and Dallas played some staunch D late. Highlighted by DeSagana Diop and Erick Dampier, the Mavericks would shoot 55% in the second half, Nowitzki would get 13 boards and 24 points while Jason Kidd netted 16 assist and 14 points. A complete team effort that did not buckle after the second period ejection of Rick Carlisle. This was the biggest comeback in Dallas Maverick and I was proud to be there. My buddy Mike Fisher, who normally stays stoic while watching the team, was yelling like a kid in the candy store at games end. Even when the score got as high as a 27 point deficit I told him,' It' early, the Wolves won't finish. Just Watch!' I got bearhugged for that proper prediction. Happy New Year Fish! The list of fired coaches now reaches Colorado where Mike Shanahan got the boot. You will noe start to hear all the talk about the chances of Mike coming to Dallas and Wade Phillips remaining defensive coordinator. It will happen, you just heard it here first. Despite all the swirl and twirl media spin, I think Bill Cowher will stay put in the booth. Wherever you go tonight, please be safe! Get a taxi designate a driver. I'd rather you pay 100 dollars for a cab instead of fifteen grand in the courts and in costs to your driving record. New Year's Eve is always amateur hour for couples. It's fun to watch what happens at 12:45 am when that truth serum kicks in. And they say karaoke and booze don't mix...Why do exes always reappear after midnight? That's what I wanna know! 2008 has been memorable. I have a few realistic goals for 2009, which I will make happen. Happy New Year friends! See you at Hotel Zaza after the Stars hopefiully knock out a win. If you hang out at Victory Park, be sure to enjoy Professor D, a great band that does great covers... Time for a nap! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/30/08: Happy Birthday Tiger Woods and LeBron James! The irony of LeBron's birthday is that his Cavaliers have failed to win in each of his previous birthdays. Maybe tonight will bring a different outcome. The world awaits what Tiger Woods's return will be like in 2009. Count me into that group. It is now being reported that the flight back from Philadelphia for the Cowboy charter was chaotic with some fisticuffs thrown into the mix. I have no 'sources' or inside track. What I do know is that if you aren't from Texas. The way the Dallas Cowboys are reported is like an Elvis sighting or the return of Jesus. Jerry Jones LOVES all the attention this team gets, good and bad. If you're close to my age you are then reminded of the Bronx Zoo circa 1977-1978 with the New York Yankees. Quick game of here and gone: In 2009 Gone from Dallas are : Tank Johnson, Greg Ellis, Nick Paulescu, Cory Proctor, Flozell Adams, Pacman Jones, Zach Thomas, Brian Stewart, Kyle McQuistan, Pat Read, and Felix Jons for good measure. Rumors shall fly in the days and weeks to come about the chance of bringing a newly fired coach to Dallas. Jerry Jones will bite te bullet on this one! I am shocked that Eric Mangini got fired in New York. You go from 4-12 to 9-7 and all the fans and higher ups want to talk about is a 1-4 finish? Man, what an A.D.D. fan base. Note to the so-called fans: If you want to chart end resulsts only, happy myopic returns when you wonder why you'll not get there for a long time. Small wonder New York/New Jersey is Giants country. This day in 1973 my Vikings were beating the crap out of the Cowboys in the championship game 27-10. I remember watching John Gilliam catching a 54 yard bomb from Fran Tarkenton. I also recall a turnover filled 4th quarter highlighted by an INT by all-time leader Paul Krause. Thought for the day: What goes through the mind of Plaxico Burress when his car backfires? Off to the AAC for a match between the T-Wolves and Mavericks. Should Dallas win if you throw out the 2-7 start, the Mavericks will have gone 17-5 to finish out 2008. Should be a cakewalk. Thursday I look forward to the second Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Two original six teams with the Hawks and Wings. I made this comment to my friend Mike Fisher. How long before Jerry Jones gets the idea of putting a rink inside that million dollar domed stadium, and filling it 100,000 fans with the Stars abd Avalanche? I predict it happens before 2012. Right outside my front door... I will be back in Uptowm post-Stars game tomorrow night. Last year was a blast. I anticipate more of the same at the Dragonfly at the Za. My camera is still being repaired. It hasn't been so bad to just watch the games and be conversational. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/29/08: Heartless...Gutless...Empty...Unprepared...Unwilling...Unable...Outplayed...Exposed...Use whatever adjective you want to describe the absolute butt whipping the Dallas Cowboys endured in Philadelphia yesterday. Cowboy fans now know how the Buffalo Bills felt in Super Bowls 27 and 28. Five turnovers, 41 unanswered points, no sense of urgency for a team that knew they would be in the playoffs with a win. That was not to be. You could point many a finger for the blame game. I recommend each coach and player look into the mirror and take note. Nine straight season finale losses. A subpar season. Players throwing coaches under the bus. A quarterback waives off the coach on 4th down. Turnovers by key players in key moments of the game. Unacceptable! Jerry Jones can say all he wants about keeping the coaching staff intact. I highly doubt the Cowsheepherders will be happy with that sentiment. This was the Cowboys worst margin of defeat in an Eagle game. I do recall a 44-0 shellacking at Texas Stadium in 1985 to the Chicago Bears. I also remember a 52-10 pasting in Texas by the Cleveland Browns. I dare say that 2008 goes down as the second worst collapse in Cowboys history. Second only to the 1986 squad who struggled in the second half. I do recall a 43-3- pasting my Vikes put down in a Sunday night game on ESPN in November 1988. Wade Phillips would be better served as merely a defensive coordinator. He has no control over the inmates who are running the asylum. According to the players, Jason Garrett's schemes have been exposed. Translation: We should have kept Tony Sparano! Tony Romo waxing philosophical mere minutes after an ass-whupping will not sit well with fans. That's the last thing they want to hear. Tank Johnson walks into the locker and yells, 'Free Agent Baby!' tells me all I need to know about a divided locker room. Tank will not be back. You can also add Greg Ellis. Jerry Jones has alot of big money paid out to athletes. It remains to be seen who returns in 2009 Potential is a ten letter word that is based on the expectations of everyone except the person for whom the potential lies. Sometimes the media can overinflate what could or should happen. In short this will be a very long postseason of discontent for Cowboys staff and players as they ponder,'What if?' The move to Arlington begins in nine months. Right across the street from me. I can walk on over. For the fans, opportunity has passed on by. No heart feelings, guys. The Cowboys of 2008 just sucked when it counted most. Happy off-season. Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/28/08: Here we are in the Final week of the regular season in the NFL. So many surprises and plots that differed from what was predicted back in August... We may very well see three rookie coaches reach the playoffs in the same year. We may also see a team that won 13 games one year ago miss the playoffs one year later. How about the first team to finish a campaign 0-16? For the Bucs, Bears, Vikes, Ravens, Jets, and Dolphins, a win and they are in with a little help. The same can be said for the Eagles and Cowpokes if the previously mentioned teams decide to lose and leave a door open. Yesterday I mentioned how this was an anniversary of the NFL's 1st overtime game, I now go on record to say that I want to see a Giants-Colts Super Bowl. Think of the reunion for those 1958 teams! I am also pulling for my Vikes to at least reach the second round of the playoffs... If I were a betting man, I would bet hard on the Chargers to continue their winning ways as they clinch the AFC West and host a playoff game with the Indianapolis Colts. I also expext the South Beach Cowboys...I mean Dophins to pull off a win in wet and windy New Jersey for Tony Sparano and win the AFC East. From 1-15 to 11-5. The numbers stayed the same. Only the hyphenation changed. Tony Sparano is my Coach of the year! Coaches who will be seeking new gigs in 2009: Romeo Crennel, Wade Phillips, Marvin Lewis, Herman Edwards, Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Jim Haslett, Tony Dungy, and maybe even Eric Mangini. You may start to hear a new name being used as a possible Cowboy successor: Bob Stoops! Nothing would surprise me anymore. Mike Modano LOVES to play the Ducks! Last night with less than ninety seconds left om overtime, Mike hit a one timer through the person of Paul Giguere for a 4-3 win. Dallas now above .500 for the first time this year, currently at #13, two points away from the #8 seed. A much more comfortbale position than where they were one months ago. Big games for Brad Richards and Mike Ribeiro. This team is teeming with confidence. An intangible that has been missing most of this young season. How the Mavericks can manage to go to Utah, not have face three of their starters, and STILL find a way to lose is beyond me! Dirk gets the rare ejection for a call he disagreed with. He will serve a suspension for said actions. Even still, as 2008 becomes 2009, the Mavericks a mere 2 games off the pace in their division. Jet Terry will be a lock for the 6th man from where I sit. Found out my friend David Sinclair won the car at the annual Norm-a-thon. A deal where local radio personality Norm Hitzges speaks for 18 hours and gives away a car. David won the car. He tells me he will give it to a charity in Austin. That's the David I have known and loved for over four years... David is also on record to say he believes the Cowboys have no heart and will find a way to lose in Philly this day. I will have more to say ahout that tomorrow. The weather will be near 60. This could favor the Cowsheepherders. It will be tough enough to don the blue and white shirt and Cowboy cap to pay off a bet. Pshaw! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will
12/27/08: Happy Saturday to all. Alas the final weekend of 2008. Where does the time go? As I was walking the dog, my sisters' Jack Russell terrier at 1 this morning, I could not believe that the temperature was still a balmy 74 degrees with a howling wind. It felt like I was in Florida or the tropics. Come 8am the winds blew harder and the rain and hail flew by rather quickly as well. Once the front shot on through, the mercury topped off at 61 yet the gusts got as high as 40 mph. In true Texas fashion, the one day of cooler will give way to three days of 69-73 degrees before we chill again on New Year's Eve. The more I ponder this the more I believe there is some validity. For the last three days I have been hearing the same word being used by more than one person. BLAH. The Holidays are over, a year is now history. We now spend time on the telly as people in power decide what was memorable about 2008 and what to look forward to in 2009. I too have noticed a sense of a letdown now that Christmas has passed. To form an analogy, I'll state that I feel like a milk carton that has had all of the air taken out of it. Now there is a fear of letting go of that carton as air will reenter and the expansion will create noise and havoc. That is what I feel like post Christmas as I attempt to devise a gameplan for 2009 and look back at all that happened and did not in 2008. I do not feel blah but I do feel a little exhausted. Spending some idle time dogsitting has allowed me a chance to channel surf and observe how: Tomorrow will be the 50th anniversary of the NFL's first overtime game with the Giants and Colts. It is also the 33 year anniversary of the first 'Hail Mary' when the Cowboys upset my Vikings 17-14 in Bloomington. To this day I contend that Drew Pearson pushed off on Nate Wright as an orange flew from the stands. How fitting would it be if the Giants and Colts were to meet for the Super Bowl? A revisit of fifty years ago and a first for pitting brother against brother. Tomorrow's matchup in Philly will be wet and warm. This could favor Dallas. It will also mark the 99th meeting between the Cowboys and Eagles. Since 1999 was the last time Dallas won a season finale maybe this is an omen. As I stated earlier ths week, I do not expect Wade Phillips, Andy Reid, or Donovan McNabb back in 2009 in their current state of flux. The Chicago Bears will be the next home for Mr. McNabb. I think the NFL folks should show the Lions-Packers game everywhere for a chance to witness the history of futility. We saw the Giants Patriots last 12/29th for free? Why not go the other way? A Loser Bowl preview, if you will. Has anyone noticed how John Harbaugh could be Edgar Martinez' twin brother? The resemblance is uncanny. Kinda like Wayne Gretzky and Princess Diana... Tomorrow I also pay off on a bet I lost. Without going into detail, for a whole shift I get to wear Cowboy attire while serving my regulars. This is a blow to my Viking roots. I am not a Cowboy fan, yet respect their history. For one day I dress up as the ultimate fan with warpaint and the works. If in Las Colinas have your camera ready. 2008 will finish with yours truly taking a break from photogaphy. Seems I jammed a lens on my Canon on Christmas Day. Probably a good omen. I pick the Eagles and Dolphins to win and advance. I also look for San Diego to become the first team in history to start a season 4-8 and advance to the playoffs. There will be some serious overhaul in the land of the billion dollar new stadium here in Arlington. Bud Selig finally does something right. Allowing over 50 million people to watch the launch of Major League TV on January 1st if you have the right cable provider. I will be watching fervently, oh yes! Also on January 1st I am wondering if the rink for the Blackhawks and Red Wings will be referred to as 'the Unfriendly Confines?'. It is but a thought. Stars and Ducks later today, with a chance to jump to the #11 seed. Plenty of time to catch up come April. Happy Bowl watching. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/26/08: Happy Friday to you! Still reeling at the thought of all the food my darling sister prepared yesterday and for next week while she goes skiing in Breckenridge, Co. This is the first time I got to spend two straight holidays with Barbara without being bombarded by the thought of work. I'll let the younger kids mind the store. Chances are that all that will happen is me hearing stories about drunkenness and stupidity amongst my coworkers off-duty. I want to take this tims to say thanks to everyone involved with yesterday's 'Yes, There Is a Santa' trip to South Dallas. This was my second year involved and to say how gratifying it was to shoot and record the events for history sake was beyond gratifying. The fact that it was almost 17 degrees warmer than last year also is a big help. From my friend KK to the efforts of men like Dave Campisi, Dan Fine, Mike Martinez, and over 45 other elves who met in HIghland Park prior to the drive south in a convoy of 20 cars and a boatload of gifts and necessities to those who are in need. A job well done! You'll forgive my upcoming rant but I must say how appalled I was at some local television I viewed over a four hour stretch. Two hours of MTV's 'Date My Mom' and 'Parental Control' I could not believe how disrespectful the kids are towards the adults. Mind you, I am aware some shows are for shock and awe. In my day, if I even thought about mouthing off to an elder there would be a baseball bat shoved up my ass so fast there'd be no time for pain, only to hope there were puddles nearby. What ever happened to respect? I don't even have children and am blown away as to what passes for 'normal' behavior... Great win for the Mavericks late last night in Portland. No coincidence that the Blazers and Mavericks wore red and green in honor of the holiday. Dirk gets hot late and the Jet ignites the team with a clutch three late and the Mavs improve to 16-11 and a big road win to start a three game trip. Can we say so now? Celtics-Lakers rematch in June albeit six months early. The media lives for the history and tradition. Both teams match up well. If the NBA is going to be a league of haves and have-nots then what you witnessed yesterday was proof that the cream always rises to the top. That one toss from Ariza to Pao Gasol for a layup was awesome. Nice win for L.A. 92-83. I believe the Celts can match what the Bulls did in 1995-96. Records to be set this day in North Texas as the mercury will climb into the low 80's in some spots before high winds bring springlike thunderboomers from the west late. If shopping, enjoy Black Friday 2 as some retail locales will drop merchandise up to 70%. That's a bargain! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/25/08: Merry X-mas and Good day to one and all! 4:45 am came awfully early. Just like last year, an early wake-up call meant prepping the camera and videocamera for the purpose of tracking the events of Santa and his helpers in South Dallas. For the 7th year in a row,'Yes there is a Santa' made a visit to an area where donations of goods go to people badly in need. If you want to discuss perspective, try to look into the eyes of a young boy or girl, maybe aged seven. The look of twinkle in their eyes as a prayer is answered when a toy, a bike, food, or maybe clothing is given to them. A gift that most of these younguns go without. Then you say to yourself that no matter how bad you think you have have it, think again! This years group of elves numbered 49. Yvette and Jeff were gracious hosts with the coffee and pastries. It was great to see some old and new faces join in the festivities. There was much to be given and a caravan of cars and trucks to do the honors. At 6:54 am the line had already begun to form in the area of South Dallas not far from Malcolm X blvd. The big Campisi truck pulled forth. The Ford F150 with over 200 bikes/trikes followed not far after. From there, Dave, KK, Sara, Steph, Jeff, Yvette, Dan, Barbara, Mike, and other elves got into the act. The people who waited in line were very well organized. It took almost two hours to empty the Campisi mobile of all gifts andf amenities to those who needed it. The aisles of smiles were more than enough for me to take in. As the sun began to rise we had one more stop to make. Last year there was a young lady who serenaded us by singing religious hymns. Her voice was mellifluous in it's clarity. I was busy banging away at the piano. This year I got to videotape and record Nettie as she did her thing. That in itself would have sufficed, until I tell you that Nettie is 101 years old! That's right, The Cubs were world champions when Nettie was born! She has lived through 14 presidents. That's some living. Today was one day where I could remain anonymous behind the camera and videocamera while others took the lead. I'm all about capturing a moment. That makes me smile and it cranks my dial. It's now almost time to head to Mansfield and visit sis and hubby. Two holiday get togethers in a row! Boy, will she be shocked. Barbara says she made cookies for me. I will not eye a scale for the next week! Sis is a hell of a cook, especially that cornbread-Yum! Time for a nap then a feast! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/24/08: Good X-Mas Eve to one and all... This will be the rare moment that I veer away from all talk of sports to take a moment to say 'thanks'! In the last year, I have been very blessed and very lucky to continue to do what I enjoy when I am not playing Will The Waiter. The core of people who have been by my side in good times and bad I give a quick thanks to: Sara AKA Cupcake-Now closing in on eight years, the true measure of a person is all that they endure/overcome over time. You have always been there without judgement or criticism. A true friend until the end. Thanks You! Kevin-Relax, I won't blow your cover. We crossed paths at a bad point in my life. You always gave encouragement when I needed it. You also reminded me of the importance that no matter how bad I think life gets, someone else has it alot worse. Thank You! Now to 'shut my face'. :) Greg-For three years you have been a source of friendship, generosity, and knowledge. You never cease to amaze me. Thank you! Barbara-The best sister a screw-up brother could ever ask for. I hope you realize that when I say I am busy with a sporting event, my pictures prove it. See you tomorrow. I love you and Thank You! David and Fred-Four years now you continue to let me serve. In good times and bad, you both serve as a wonderful reminder of what fighting the good fight is all about. Thank you both! Mom and Dad-The lessons remain. So does the piss and vinegar. You were right, you usually are. You two are the light that shines so bright. Thank You! Brian-You hired me and kept me on. Thank You! Merrill-You never knew the meaning of quit. Bring on Opening Day! Thank You! David B-Keep coaching and I'll keep encroaching. Thank You! Fish-For all your insights and observations. Thank You! Stephanie-For the Picasso that I know remains deep inside that ice-addled mind of integrity. Thank You! The MySpace Peeps-We don't have to agree. I appreciate your comments and thoughts good and bad. Thank You!
For the 2nd year in a row Christmas Day will start early with a 5 am wakeup as we distribute gifts in South Dallas for those less fortunate. 'Yes There Is a Santa'. A yearly program that Dave Campsi has made possible with a whole lot of elves. Last year was an eye opener for yours truly. This time I will merely smile and give with an open heart. 2008 began badly. It ended strongly. I am reminded of a phrase Robert Schuller once uttered,'Tough times don't last...Tough people do!' Happy Holidays to all and to all a Great New Year! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/23/08: Happy Tuesday! The weather continues to improve from cold to comfy. The lines at the malls aren't nearly as bad as one might think despite a sluggish economy. The few travails I have had to contend with has left me little stress and the deals have been remarkable. I am guessing there are quite a few last minute shoppers who will try to knock out all the necessary gift certificate buying at 4pm on X-mas Eve. Was out at the Tinseltown Plano location to catch a movie with a buddy. If you're a fan of Jim Carrey, by all means go see 'Yes Man'. The method acting and improv stuff Jim has been renowned for since 'In Living Color' days is off the charts. Carrey will leave you laughing all through the movie. I recommend it! Just finished reading a bio on Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Titled, 'Wouldn't It Be Nice!' the 300 plus pages paint a not so rosy picture of life with the surf band of the 60's, the infighting with Dad, the special bond Brian and Dennis had, leading up to Brain's close call with death in 1982 before being saved by a doctor. Reading that story reminds me that success and fame may be fun. Not sure I like the tradeoff of all the baggage and damage that also accompanies it. Having had this discussion with Shannon, one of my regulars, she believes that the Horned Frogs of TCU and Boise State may very well be one of the more exciting games of all the Bowl games that happen between now and January 8th. Having seen TCU in September, I am inclined to agree. The Frogs defense is outstanding. The Smurfs like to pass so this should be a donnybrook for the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. The Mavericks will try to continue their winning ways (after a sound victory over the hapless Wizards on Sunday) when they tackle the suddenly ordinary Grizzlies tonight. One month ago you had Marc Gasol causing all kinds of havoc on offense. He has since been reduced to a minimal role. It is being rumores that Marc Iavarone is on borrowed time in Tennessee. Josh Howard should see some playing time as his ankle slowly responds to therapy and rest. JJ Barea and Brandon Bass continue to get added minutes in the latter part of games when Dallas has a lead. It will be a reunion of sorts when the Stars meet the Maple Leafs in Toronto this night. A Dallas win shall place them at the #13 seed and a mere 3 points away from the #8 seed. If Marty Turco can tighten the screws on the net and the efforts of Neal, Brunnstrom, Ott, and Ribeiro continue, this team can only go up in the standings. By my count Dallas has now played at a 7-3-1 clip since the 6-2 debacle at home to the Sharks 11/28/08. As poorly as the Cowboys played on Saturday night, do we really want to root them onto victory, only to see them play four games on the road if they are to advance? I say spare the optimism. With the game 'flexed' to 3:15pm, it means the fans will if Dallas backed in, or if Philly still has something to play for. The Cowboys have not won a Week 17 game since year 2000. December and Dallas do not jibe. It looks like Philly will be a cold and heartless place. Then again, it's like that year around. Terrell Owens does make one valid point: Roy Williams should see the ball more! In nine games I am counting only seventeen receptions. Need I say more? Can you imagine the amount of acid amd vitriol that awaits T.O. in the city of Brotherly Love? So the nation is in an economic windfall yet the Yankees can afford to shell out half a BILLION dollars for three ballplayers?!?! Try playing in New York first. Speaking from experience, only when the Yankees have brought talent up from the minors have they been successful. Remember when Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Bernie Williams were the nucleus of a 90's dynasty? This winter of wheeling dealing will exalt the New York futility. I also remind you that Tex and A-Rod didn't exactly get along when they were in Arlington. Happy viewing if you like the dysfunctional funhouse. The next few days will be a ballbreaker. I wouldn't want it any other way. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/21/08: Happy Sunday to my sporting throng of readers! How ironic that the city of Baltimore should get the distinction of being the locale to effectively end two stadiums with history and tradition with a resounding defeat. You may recall that I has a whole bunch of needless facts about Yankee Stadium when it was shut down. In the case of the Cowboys about the only factoid I could come up with was that had they won, it would have been #214 on the career side. 214 happens to be the local area code. To no avail... The Cowboys had never allowed TD runs for 77 and 82 yards on back to back plays. Joe Flacco was one of only two rookie quarterbacks to win at Texas Stadium, The other was Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. Just like at Texas Stadium and at my place of work, when Willis McGahee made the 77 yard run, you could hear the air exit the lungs of all Cowboy fans. In my mind the play that broke the backs of Dallas was the 4th down fake field goal run for a first down. That was awesome! The Cowboys do not look a team that is playoff-worthy and frankly I h ope they do not back their way in! No fan wants to watch their team play on the road for four straight week games if they reach the promised land... A warm Saturday morning got very cold and windy very quickly. From kickoff until the games ending, the mercury would drop almost 34 degrees! Spoke with quite a few tailgaters after the game, they were sorry to see the old Irving Princess be read her last rites. If you were hoping for a well-planned postmortem by Cowboys of the past, forget it! The acoustics were atrocious, the ceremonies didn't start unitl almost 11 pm and there were quite a few huffs and puffs about the selectivity of which Cowboys were invited for this finale. No matter, the fact that this game was featured on NFL Network and not Fox or CBS insured that the audience would dwarf what was a great ratings night 11/29/07 when Dallas hosted Green Bay. Tony Romo is injured and his throws left alot to be desired! Terrell Owens was not a factor. I predict that after next week in Philadelphia, no matter who wins and gets in. both Wade Phillips and Andy Reid are GONE! The catcalls for Bill Cowher will resurface as I had said back in 2006. Sadly Cowher will be your next coach in Cleveland for the Browns. He played there alongside Lyle Alzado circa 1978-1979 at middle linebacker. For today I predict that the Redskins upset the Eagles, The Falcons cause havc in Minnesota, and the Dolphins get to the ten win mark, thus becoming the first NFL team to rise from 1-15 to 10-5 in one year! Go Bill Parcells, or should I say Dallas Southeast? Don't look now but the San Diego Chargers are still in the thick of the AFC West race! Don't ask me how. Weather will be a factor in the East and Northwest as snow is forecast. How I miss playing football in the snow! I am hopeful the Lions can pull off a win. If not they become the first team to start a season 0-15. Since the season became a 16 game schedule in 1978, no team has ever done worse than 0-14. The Bucs of 1976 did that while the Colts of 1986 started 0-13 before finishing off with three straight wins... Tennessee-Pittsburgh will determine home field advantage for the winner. Likewise for Carolina and the Giants. New York due to snapoutof it's doldrums. Happy watching. Time to go to work! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/20/08: To the weekend we have arrived. All week long we have seen tribute after tribute locally for all that has tranpired in the last 38 years in Texas Stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. In my last entry I talked about some of the more memorable games. Thought I'd take a moment to talk about five moments that stand in my mind forever... 9/24/00-A moment frozen in time. The essence of the importance of the Star at midfield. As the 49ers were playing an away game at Texas Stadium, Terrell Owens would do an act of desecration so horrid in the eyes of Cowboy fans it took one Dallas ballplayer to take severe exception. When San Francisco scored a touchdown early and Terrell Owens began running for the star on the 50 yard line, George Teague prepped himself to lay out T.O. for daring to stand on the star. With a thunderous hit on Owens, defending the star was immortalized in much the same way as Rick Monday in 1976 as a Dodger when fans tried to burn the American flag. 9/9/85-Opening Night and a Monday Night affair. A game the Cowboys won going away 44-14 over the Washington Redskins. Late in the game the throng of 65,000 began to sing 'Happy Birthday' to Joe Theisman. He turned 35 that night. Two months later also on a Monday, Joe would have his career ended on a vicious tackle by Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor. October 1975-Another Monday night game with the Kansas City Chiefs. Golden Richards made a one-handed circus grab of a pass off the arm of Roger Staubach in the second quarter. Howard, Frank, and Don were beside themselves! 10/5/75-Week 3 in the season. The Cowboys had a whole slew of rookies starting. Thomas 'Hollywood' Henderson was one of them. In this game against the Buccaneers, Thomas ran a kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown. Seing him slam dunk the football over the crossbar was pure athleticism! The cheerleaders caught my eye that day for the first time. 11/24/94-Jason Garrett leads the Cowboys to a come-from-behind win over the Green Bay Packers 42-31. Garrett the only ballplayer to have 3 Super Bowl rings yet never play a single down... Tonight's finale with the Cowboys Ravens will start off warm then get cold in a hurry. Another Arctic air mass shoots through North Texas as we say goodbye to Irving and hello to Arlington. This should be a defensive battle. One that should favor Dallas for a win and a showdown in Philly next weekend. I hope al the bickering is now a thing of the past. If you are headed to Texas Stadium, dress warmly. It is after all the start of old man winter. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/18/08: Hello Thursday! What the fog is going on around here? Used to be in the morning fall of awakening in the great Northwest in late November that you would contend with fog. So srong that visibility would be reduced to less than a quarter of a mile! Not that bad this day in Dallas but enough to warrant a comment. Best wishes to a friend of mine who is dealing with some health issues. Get well Greg! Many people are pulling for you to get well soon! As promised, my Top 5 list for most memorable games at Texas Stadium...In no particular order: 1.11/24/83-Turkey Day in the ice and snow. A hard fought 14-13 lead and games appears to be Dallas' when Miami kicks an errant field goal...until Leon Lett ran to the ball and made contact with it! Dolphins get field position close to the goal line and kick the game winner. Leon Lett was already the butt of many jokes after Don Beebe stripped him of a touchdown in the Super Bowl nine months earlier. 2.11/28/74-With Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall dressed up as Cowboy and Indian. This was the game when Curtis McClinton put a hit on Roger Staubach early. Staubach suffered a concussion, in came Clint Longley. A young man who hunted rattle snakes in the off-season. Against the Washington Redskins with time running out, Longley would heave a fifty yard bomb to Drew Pearson for a game-winning TD and a dramatic 24-23 victory on Turkey Day. 3.12/16/79-Also in a game with heated rival Washington. A back and forth affair where the Skins score 17 straight. Dallas countered with 21. 17 more for Washington. Roger Staubach got two touchdowns in 91 seconds for a wildly contested 35-34 Cowboy win! That game rocked! 4.11/26/87-Another great rivalry over the years, The Minnesota Vikings were riding the crest of a wave with Anthony Carter and Wade Wilson. This game went to overtime before the Vikes would prevail 44-38 on Turkey Day. Years later the Cowsheepherders would thank the Vikings for a 90's dynasty courtesy of Herschel Walker and ten draft picks... 5.11/9/80-A Sunday night affair at Texas Stadium on ABC. Danny White would find his rhythym late in a game against Dan Fouts, Chuck Muncie, and 'Air Coryell' in a scorefest won by the Cowboys 42-31. There was one wild TD catch made in this game on a double deflection which wound up in the hands of Kellen Winslow. There's my list for most memorbale Cowboy games at Texas Stadium. Im just happy that now the Cowboys come to my backyard and I will get to enjoy all the baseball and football I want within walking distance. I am also guessing that the wi-fi inside the new stadium will be second to none! Ranger tickets renewed with a third seat added in case a friend wants to bring a child along or fellow friend. That will give them someone to talk to while I sit and watch (smile). Time for some for Stars hockey! Hopefully another win to erase the Opening Day overtime loss we suffered at the hands of the Blue Jackets. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/17/08: Happy Birthday Brad Davis! Longtime Dallas Maverick and longtime Maverick announcer. For the first time this fall I heeded what the weatherman said and stayed home. The first Stars I missed this year as the roads stayed iffy and I had already seen the Coyotes play six days earlier. It was actually a nice switch to listen to Ralph and Razor do their essence of vernacular while waxing poetically on the ice haps. Marty Turco all of a sudden has won three of four starts and appears to regained some of his bearings. I said it earlier in the week, it noe bears repeating. The Kingsmen may get revived due to the efforts of one Louie Eriksson. Two goals, including the overtime winner on a great behind the goal feed by Mike Ribeiro, gave Dallas a 2-1 victory over the Coyotes. With the Blue Jackets in town Thursday, there is a very good chance that this hockey team finally escapes the cellar! I am holding out hope... Three days left before the final Cowboy game is played at Texas Stadium. 38 years of games and memories. Tomorrow I will make mention of my personal top 5 memores of games played at Texas Stadium. And yes, I will invoke the name of Cliff Longley! Jason Terry started off flat, came on strong in a 96-86 Maverick victory in Toronto. Dirk Nowitzki has a nice streak of his own going. In his last nine games, The Dirkinator has averaged 32.4 points a game. That's tops in scoring for that stretch! It may not always look pretty, yet after a 2-7 start, will anyone complain about a local team that has won 12 of 15 and sits a mere two games out of first place? I didn't think so! Warmer weather to hit us come Friday. A chance at 75 before another cold front hits North Texas early Sunday morning. No precipitation, just COLD!!! I'll be better prepared this time around. The next two weeks will be a blur between house sitting, parties, work, sports events, and of course welcoming 2009. I know where I'll be New Year's Eve. It will be safe, warm, and crowded with snooty hotness of the milf variety. As I always tell Mom, 'Milf does a body good!' Have a great day! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/16/08: Happy Tuesday from frigid North Texas. It amazed me how people get this crazy idea about trying to drive on slick roads. On an okay weather day, it is considered a Texas rite of passage to ride someone's tail on the tollway. Playing pole position in an effort to get a clear view of what lies ahead is also a commonality. Of course this all changes when you add weather into the mix. For starters, why are some drivers dumb enough to think it's okay to come to a complete stop on a bridge? Even though you have traffic moving ahead and behind you? An accident waiting to happen. Another example of driver stupidity is the jerk that is in a 4-Wheeler. This guy will have no problem street hopping over curbs and grass to enter slow moving traffic on the freeway and assume he can raise the speed limit to 70. Then we should be surprised when he rear ends three smaller cars and continues to go the hit and run route. Jerk! In between a Maverick game and dinner I saw three vehicles get completely turned around on the 35, 114, and 360. All three spins occurred on a bridge. All three braked way too hard. All three were in a hurry to get somewhere. I was okay. I was sober. Have been for over eleven years. Getting to Arlington to Dallas and back was a cinch. Conditiond being what they were I stayed home this night and didn't mind watching my Stars win a thriller over the Coyotes in OT 2-1. Mavs the night before had no answers for the Nuggets. Chauncy Billups led by example, Carmelo kept making threes. Kenyon Martin andNene were monsters in the rebounding department. The Nuggets would win in convincing fashion by ten 98-88 as the Mavs finish with a 5-2 homestand. For the first time since 11/28th, Dallas takes to the road for three. First stop: Toronto with new coach Jay Triano and Chris Bosh. The Mavs curently sit in the 9th seed with a 13-10 record. This day in NFL history: OJ Simpson rushed for 200 yards in a 34-14 win over the Jets at Shea Stadium in 1973. In doing so Simspon shattered Jim Brown's record for yards in a 14 game season as he surpassed 2,000 yards. I was at Anaheim Stadium 12/9/84 when Eric Dickerson broke that record in a game against the Oilers. In 1979, Roger Staubach played his final regular season game at Texas Stadium against the Washington Redskins. The Skins led 17-0. Dallas then scored 21 in a row. Washington answered back with another 17. In the final 1:38 Roger and the Boys would score twice, making a TD toss to Billy Joe Dupree for a thrilling 35-34 victory over their hated rival. I remember watching that game mere hours after the Tampa Bay Bucs edged the Chiefs 3-0 in an absolute monsoon! While vacationing in Florida with Mom and Dad I was just happy to watch Bryant Gumbel, Tom Brookshier, and Pat Summerall from the 74 degree comforts of the hotel. We may soon be hearing an old Kingsmen tune getting a reprise. 'Louie, Louie!' in honor of the play of Star Eriksson. His two goals gave the Stars some much needed points in a race for the number 8 spot in the Western Conference. Dallas exacted some revenge on Gretzky's bunch with a 2-1 win after playing like crap back on December 10th in a 5-3 defeat. With six other teams 5-6 points away from the #8 seed, each game until April shall be a battle. Speaking of April, renewals all done for Rangers games in 2009. As poorly as both winter teeams are doing, I may get to actually watch all 81 games. That would require luck, and discipline. In an ideal world, I must find a hockey fan, baseball fan, and basketball fan, then I be good to go! The good news is the Los Angeles Dodgers will make their 1st appearance in Arlington in 2009. That will leave only the Reds and Rockies as the only teams I haven't seen since my first game in Yankee Stadium in 1973. Warmer weather to return to North Texas tomorrow. Mid 70's by Friday and Saturday, then back to the Arctic zone come Monday. We'll be lucky to get above 25. At least the Master is feeling healthy and happy. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will
12/15/08: Happy Monday friends! Nothing I like better than when a regular hits me with a fat tip AND a Cuban Cigar! Oh, life is good as 2008 winds down... I know of many families that have in-house arguments and disagreements, yet when it is time to shine as one, blood is always thicker than water. This is the best analogy I can use when describing how defensively together the Dallas Cowboys played when sticking it to the suddenly fragile N.Y. Giants 20-8. As we push toward the final two weeks of the 2008 regular season, it is looking more and more like the December 28th finale for the final playoff spot will pit Dallas versus Philadelphia. Tashard Choice had another stellar performance, Marion Barber was a presence if not effective, Tony Romo was on his game, and I had to chuckle when Andrea Kremer on NBC's postgame got an interview with Terell, Jason, and Tony at the same time. Like I said, Ed Werder better get himself a playoff share should Dallas advance to the next level. I am really becoming a fan of DeMarcus Ware. His level of consistency and his ability to stunt and rush, causing rushes and hurries out of the Quarterbacks hands is a marvel. It looks more and more like 'The Plax-ident heard round the world' is now starting to affect the Giants more than any in-fighting, real or imagined, in the Cowboy locker room. This Saturday will be the final game ever at Texas Stadium. Just like the Orioles closed out Yankee Stadium, the Baltimore Ravens now close out the Cowboys arena in Dallas. There will be a HUGE postgame memorial, and celebs galore in the building. I will be stuck working, but look forward to some postgame hi-jinx in Las Colinas. Cowboys now sit at 9-5 and a half game lead on the Eagles. Baltimore feeling the sting of a stuning home loss to the Steelers. The late TD was called on a challenge that favored Pittsburgh. The victory gave Ben and Company a first round bye into the playoff hunt. Many people believe the Steelers are on a collision course with a Super Bowl return. We'll see. Watching the Falcons do their magic act in 2008 makes me wonder what would have been if Michael Vick didn't get into trouble all those years ago? At 9-5 they are still in it! These birds could theoretically leave some dropping on the brim of the hats those North Texas boys wear. The Jets pulled off an amazing win at home against the Bills 31-27. Defense was the key on a J.P. Losman sack late for a dramatic TD run and an improbable win. The AFC East has a horse race with the Jets, Dolphins, and Patriots at 9-5. Tony Sparano gets my vote for coach of the year! The Lions now fall to 0-14. Back in 1977 after 26 straight losses, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first ever game in the Big Easy. Guess where the Lions are playing this weekend? Yup, Nawlins! I predict the Lions pull off the big upset in Louisiana. It's time... A look at the U.S. map and it appears weather will play a huge factor in many games this weekend. I remember when ABC handled the Monday Night Football chores, you never saw a cold weather game in December. Games were always under a dome, in Miami, or Los Angeles. Be sure to remember this when you watch the Bears play the Packers, the longest running rivalry in NFL history, next Monday night in conditions that will only exacerbate the frozen tundra. Denver comes to town. My first look at Chauncy Billups since the trade. George Karl has Melo and the boys playing at a .700 clip since saying bye-bye to A.I. The Mavs will try to finish off a seven game homestand at 6-1. I will be content with a 5-2 finish. Exciting or not, The Mavericks of 2008 will be lucky to make the #8 seed. Weather will be the story in North Texas as the high today and tomorrow will not get above 26. I can already see the A.D.D. front rear brake drivers spinout on bridges and overpasses and cause massive traffic tie-ups along the mixmaster. Insurance companies LOVE to drool on days like these. We were 53 degrees warmer just 24 hours prior. Had a quick moment with Mom and Dad. They are well and are happy that I am well. Remember to honor those that gave you life during the holiday season. THAT is where it's at. At least give them a call in between an intermission or halftime. They will understand. Time to thaw, then go for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/14/08: Happy Sunday! The winds have blown hard all weekend. This morning was absolutely gorgeous with the mercury at 78. That would change as this day would progress.... With all the running around and holiday shopping I have been doing it occurred to me I forgot to mention a special anniversary. Back on Thursday, I reached my five year mark since I smoked my last cigarette. Yes, I will enjoy a good cigar on occasion. It is very gratifying to know that as the price of tobacco and alcohol rise, I have kept the wallet bereft of making such purchases. One day at a time... It appears that Marion Barber will play this day at Texas Stadium. This is a big boost for the hopes of the Cowsheepherders who live and die for eights days a year. Add that to the efforts of Tashard Choice, you have a good ground tandem to eat up yards and chew up time. I have few concerns about the Cowboys defense. If DeMarcus Ware and Bradie James do their thing, I really think the Cowboys find a way to win. I am curious to see how Jason Witten, Tony Romo, and T.O. respond to all the accusations, sources, and epithets post-game. Weather will play factor as the evening gets nearer. By Monday morning we will be lucky to see the 26 degree mark. I don't mind the weather. When the winds start to blow then I get a little edgy. Congratulations to Sam Bradford on winning the Heisman Trophy. He was quick to congratulate his offensive line and his coaching staff. I like it when a player is aware that the results of many can lead to the the accolades of one. Oklahoma fans can enjoy this win for some time. Tim Tebow looked as if he was robbed. Nah! I am having a problem watching the Mavericks play down to the level of talent. Last night I saw a very flat Dallas Maverick team hold off a 2-22 Thunder squad. Kevin Durant made a triumphant return to North Texas with a young and hungry supporting cast. Jeff Reed shot well from the perimeter, and the Thunder showed alot of promise. An ability to close out games is why they are 2-22. PJ Carlesimo was already axed before the road trip would commence. Give it two years, this Thunder team will make things interesting in the Western Conference. Dallas prevailed barely 103-99. The new look Thunder bore little resemblance if any to the forty plus years of Sonic traditions... I regret I had to go home early. Pal Joe and Kevin inform me that Robert Horry, the Will Smith lookalike, was at the Za postgame. I was told how quick he was to answer questions, talk about his Laker days and his days in the NBA. I hate when I miss a good photo-op! Damn! The AAC was empty as more people were interested in the Heisman presentation and holiday shopping. Spent a solid five hours going through my rear closet and ridding myself of items that have sat for over six years. It amounted to a slew of shirts, ties, sweaters, and socks that will go to a good home of someone less fortunate. All of a sudden I have a lot of closet room and a slew of hangers. Now to peruse through the front closet and see what else I can give away for the holidays. An 18 hour day awaits me this day in the bar. Looking forward to appeasing all the New Yorkers and the Cowsheepherders before the kickoff. If you are going, be safe and designate a driver! Time for a nap! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/13/08: Happy Saturday to you. As I was telling a multitude of the Michigan faithful after last night's rare win on the Wings, today the Motor City Madman hit the big 60! Ted Nugent, the man whose 'Double Live Gonzo' album in 1977 got me through many nights of Mad Dog 20/20 and 3 am homework assigments, is now nearing that special Denny's Diner Card! Ted or Alive... Shock, surprise, headscratching, amazed, bestilled. How else can I describe the way Marty Turco stopped 37 of 38 shots by the Red Wings and the way the Stars played controlled defense? Dallas did it in a convincing 3-1 victory. Key goals by Fabian Brunnstrom and Mike Ribeiro to put the game away late. The fans were on their feet and cheering. I was telling Greg as we were leaving the AAC that htis teamhas no excuses. Just an ability to just focus and defense and get in front of the net. The power play continues to be an arch nemesis. For one night the Dallas Stars played the way they did last April/May when marching toward the Cup. The highlight of this night had to be the dolt sitting next to me. Fake colored contacts on, a running play-by-play of all the action, EVERY penalty responded by, 'Dawg, you can't do that! Dayum!' 'That's what I'm talking about baby!' 'Pass it, shoot it, what are you thinking, dawg?' Probably be his only appearance with his dye-job-in-the-hair 20-something sister. The fact he looked like The Rock made me almost say, 'It doesn't matter what your mouth says-DAWG!' Avoid this idiot on New Year's Eve... If there is an economic downturn going on in the U.S. don't tell that to the New York Yankees. Borrowing from the book of Tom Hicks, a quarter of a billion dollars has now been spent on two pitchers. C.C Sabathia and A.J. Burnett figure to be the top starters for the Gotham stripers. For more initial fun how about rounding out the acquistions in the infield with U.L. Washington. A.J. Pierszynski, and have B.B King and K.D. Laing do the national anthem? It's like that old Texas myth that all women have two names that start with Betty Sue and Mary Lou. It will take more than that for the Yankees to overcome their doldrums. 2009 will not be their year. Earlier in the week I made the comment that if there is justice in the world, Colt McCoy should be your Heisman winner. He did after defeat both the Sooners and the Tigers head to head. Unfortunately as I ponder this even more, I cannot look past five 60 point performances by the Sooner peeps in 2008, five huge margins of victory. I will be surprised if Sam Bradford does not win the Heisman trophy. Happy watching... Another week and the bowl bonanza shall begin. Of all the Bowl games that will be happening, I actually look forward to watching the January 2nd Cotton Bowl Texas Tech-Ole Miss matchup. That should be a barn-burner. Graham Harrell has some redeeming to do after their previous game debacle. For all the talk of Florida and Oklahoma, I go on record to say that I belive Ohio State-Texas will be the most exciting bowl game of them all. Mack Brown knows how to close out a season. Bob Stoops can not! If there are any surprises for tomorrow in the NFL, I expect the Bengals to defeat the Redskins and end their playoff hopes. Even with the Cardinals having clinched a playoff spot, I believe my Vikes will have their troubles in the desert. Chiefs to upset the Chargers, Houston will outlast the Texans and I think the Bills can upset the New York Bretts. Philly should have an easy go of things on Monday night against the Browns. I even expect the Dolphins to continue their winning ways. What a story 2008 has been for Miami after a 1-15 2007! Time to out-Thunder the Thunder! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will
12/12/08: Happy Birthday Frank Sinatra and Happy Friday! For the fourth time in the last month North Texas is going to get to enjoy a little Gemini reprieve. That's my term for wayward weather swings. If you have violent mood swings apply the same thought for the weather and you get the picture. On Sunday morning the weather will top off at 78 in the morning, then do an Arctic plunge the rest of the day. That's the way it is sometimes in North Texas. Time like these I give thanks for still having the ice scraper Gail gave me nine years ago. Remember roomie? I can still read the Admiral Realty name of the insurance rep from Alki Point named Terry Gagnon. A life saver-you are Gail... How appropriate that as the Giants prepare to come to town, we celebrate what was a birth for Francis Albert Sinatra. You see, I too was born in Hoboken, NJ way back when. I always appreciate when the East Coast folks swing south to boo the Cowboys. When they dine out and realize they are being served by one of their very own, they will tip accordingly. Unlike the typical Cowboy fan who will pay the mortgage on season tickets, nurse one order of buffalo wings, then ask how much a Bud costs since dining out is a luxury that's never done. I'll take New Yorkers and Philly folks for tipping anyday...Unless you are a beer/liquor vendor for my store, then it's all good. With regard top this Sunday night game, I have a theory. It is one where you throw enough mud at the wall, some of it will stick. In this case of reporter versus athlete, I find it funny how an athlete says something, the reporter will then embellish said remark to sell a newspaper. Isn't it funny how the soundbite is the same when given to 25 different beat writers, yet the story gets more angles than a flyfisherman's convention? Where am I going with this? Simple: The Cowboys are tossing smoke screens to make headlights. This will make the Giants team think they have very little troubleshooting (no pun intended Plax!) whatever it is Dallas tries to do offensively. This could bode well for the Cowboys. That, and with the Giants having already clinched, there is no urgency for the G-men. In the event the Cowboys win their game Sunday night, Ed Werder better get a Super Bowk share for all the folly his 'source' reported. For all we know Terrell Owens is his own source. Know this too: Tony Romo couldn't be bothered with all the gossipy bullshine. Think he doesn't read and hear enough of that already with Jessica? Nope! I also believe there is a wall of difference between what is being reported and where the opinion-o-meter slant starts. This will be a very busy weekend for the fans and the players as Texas Stadium now has two games left in it's illustrious 38 year career. Always a great show of fandom and history, the Red Wings are in town tonight. I expect nothing out of the ordinary. I expect Johan Franzen to raise holy hell and for Dan Cleary to cause all kinds of headaches for the Stars. I also think back to the great series these two teams played last May in the Western Conference Finals. The octopie should fly on this night. Mavericks had another night where they appeared flat after playing a tough rival. The Bobcats gave Dallas all they could with Emeka Okafur and D.J. Augustine wreaking havoc in the paint and doing a better job of rebounding. Dirk had another game where he went above 30. Jet Terry hits some clutch threes down the stretch as the Mavs held off Charlotte 94-90. Dallas now a perfect 10-0 against the team from North Carolina. As Ric Flair might say, that merits a big WOO! Rick Carlisle and company now get to entertain the team formerly known as Seattle when the Oklahoma City Thunder make their debut in Dallas tomorrow night. The 2-21 Thunder I might add. Once you get past Kevin Durant and Desmond Mason you have a team of unknowns. Heisman Trophy to be awarded tomorrow. Think Sam Bradford. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/11/08: Happy Birthday 'Diamond Dave Yates! And on this day, the mercury arose ever higher. Happy Thursday friends. It goes from bad to worse where the Dallas Stars go. If I were to put this into a poetic form, or a limerick, it may go something like this: There once was a man named Jokinen When he played here (during shootouts) he'd knock em in I am thinking of Jussi, this man is named Ollie Again the Stars lose and no ones's jolly... Last night's loss to the Coyotes was very frustrating. It marked the 5th time we take a 1-0 lead only to give it away. Martin Hanzat and Ollie Jokinen accounted for four of the five goals. Marty Turco looked especially bad on one play where he went outside the crease to clear a puck, only to have it go right into enemy hands for a score. Toward the latter part of the game I was glass side right by Kevin Millwood and friend. There was some loud booing by the few who chose to remain. Now 4 points back from gettingout of the cellar. With the Red Wings in town Friday, I am not holding my breath anymore...Pics will be up later in the day over at myspace. WTF is up with Terrell Owens? Jealous that Tony Romo throws more to Jason Witten? Believes that Tony and Jason are having secret meetings to hash out plays? Are you kidding me? Yo, T.O. look at the stats. Since your arrival, YOU have been the one with the most throws. YOU have been the one with the many inexplicable drops, and YOU have once again attempted to undermine your teammated and your sport by running off at the mouth like a castrated divs who thinks the world revolves around him. Jason Witten merely does a better job of hanging onto the ball after it comes to him! Tony Romo is a standup guy and he will let all of this drama blow on by. If the Giants beat Dallas by 30, I won't shed a tear. You were doing so well, Terrell. This time around it only took you three years to play the drama queen. To pick the week before your biggest game of the year...Sad. I pity the poor Cowsheepherders who have to stand behind and pick up that mile of dung. This makes Duane Thomas appear to be more of a genius for just playing and not talking to the media back in 1971-1972. Finally got the needed haircut. What a difference a good shear makes! For the last three years my pal Sara has had the honors. For eight years I have known of this young lady. A real trooper of a gal with an eye for beauty. It is always her mission to make other people look their very best. She does her job damn well! If you reside near the area of Plano and need a change of heart and hair, may I recommend my friend Sara at the Eco Salon and Spa. Located at Parker Rd and the tollway in Plano. Tell them Mr. Will sent you. After 2 days in the frigidaire zone, today was downright comfy at 61. Back to 74 tomorrow. Monday it gets cold again in North Texas as another Arctic front shall head south. Charlotte Bobcats in town this day. Career record of 0-9 against the Mavericks. Beware the trap game, Mavs! It's also the return of Longhorn D.J. Augustin. I'll be there! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/10/08: Over the hump I say, and good day! It took double overtime before the Dallas Mavericks fell to the San Antonio Spurs in what I can only describe as blustery whiteout conditions. A tipoff commenced, it was snowing in downtown Dallas. Wind gusts were as high as 35 mph. I was kicking myself for forgetting to wear a hat to keep my ears cold, only to remember the morning after that I kept one in the trunk of my car, stupid me! Leave well enough alone may very well be the mantra for the Spurs, for every time I watch them play and perform it's all about keeping the pace of a game at a slower tempo. In the second period alone Tim Duncan and Tony Parker would trade off on the dishing and dunking routine. It would account for 23 out of the 30 points San Antone put on the board. Tim Duncan would knock out 32 points and 14 rebounds in a 133-126 victory over Dallas. Their second loss in eleven games. JJ Barea was huge as he had a 13 point 4th quarter en route to a 19 point game. Dirk in defeat would hammer out over 30 points. A great game until the end as the fans who braved the elements got their moneys worth... All morning long the talk at work was who will win the Heisman trophy Saturday. I am picking Sam Bradford. My coworkers were saying it will be Colt McCoy to offset the secrewjob Texas had in the BCS. I chuckled at that sentiment. In that case, may it be Tim Tebow so Archie Griffin will no longer be the lone back-to-back Heisman winner in college history. I will be very surprised if Sam Bradford does not get the final tally. Putting up 60 points five games in a row is really saying something! McCoy still has next year... After four days off the Dallas Stars return to the ice to battle the Phoenix Coyotes. They suffered a 7-1 beatdown in Chicago on Sunday. For some reason when Shane Doan and company come to town, Dallas waffles between playing up and down. Ilya Bryzgalov had a rotten game at goalie Sunday but will get the start tonight. A win and Dallas would escape the dreaded #15 label in their conference. A win would also mean no mistakes defensively. Ollie Jokinen also makes his first start after a lengthy injury. I hope he is not a factor... A rumor is surfacing that T.O and Tony Romo are having 'jealousy issues'...hmmmmm. Diva T.O. having issues at crunch time? Nah! Say it ain't so! More to come I am sure... I'll be on the glass cheering and clicking away my beloved Stars win or lose. Cold weather to continue until Friday... Time for some hot chocolate! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/09/08: Happy Tuesday to you! Only in North Texas can you have such a swing of the pendulum where the weather goes. As the old saying goes,'If you don't like Texas weather, just wait a day. If you don't like Chicago weather, just wait five minutes!' Today's forecast is for cloudy, stormy and mild, high 75. By this time tomorrow, we will be lucky to top the 40 degree mark. Possible snow flurries on Wednesday. Almost winter but there is baseball to be discussed. With winter meetings going on in Las Vegas there will be some serious running and gunning. While I wish the Rangers would roll the dice and bet on a '7', it looks as if Nolan Ryan and company will be sellers. Monday we said goodbye to Gerald Laird. Gerald is now with the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two young talented unprovens. This means Taylor Teagarden and Jarrod Saltalamacchia will get the lions share of the catching duties in 2009. I wish Gerald well in Motown where he will get to catch everyday. CC Sabathia appears to be the big draw on the free agent market. This means either the Yankees or Dodgers will secure his services for big money. I am hearing amounts as high as 140 million for six years. That is mind boggling to me in this economy. You can also expect Frankie Rodriguez to leave Anaheim and wind up somewhere in New York as a Met or a Yankee. I do not expect Mark Teixeira to play alongside A-Rod. I really believe he will stay in Angel land. Randy Johnson is also talking about playing one more season as he is 5 wins away from 300. Why not be a Ranger for one season? We did that with Sammy Sosa in 2007 for his 600th homer. The Big Unit would pay some nice dividends in Arlington with all that knowledge. The San Antonio Spurs will be in town tonight at the AAC, I will be there. Trying to eye Eva Longoria is always a tough assignment but one that merits a lot of effort. Tony Parker and Tim Duncan are back! When the Mavs and Spurs played back on November 3rd that was not the case. Josh Howard will now be out indefinitely with his bad ankle. This means the Mavericks will go small with JJ Barea and Jet. Whenever these two teams meet it always goes down to the wire. Dallas will try to win it's tenth game in eleven tries. There are reports that Pacman Jones may be done for the year with a bad neck. Stay tuned! 72 at 2 this morning when I went for a walk. By 6pm the mercury plummeted to the upper 40s and a horrific biting north wind. Glad I invested in some firewood. Are you getting your shopping done? I know I am. Time for a hat and a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/08/08: Happy Monday to one and all. This is a day that brings me all sorts of pain. Three types in fact. The first two are the pain of remembering how we lost two good individuals to an assassins bullet in 1980 and 2004. Also on a Monday night in 1980, it was Howard Cosell who would break the story to over 50 million people in the waning moments of a ballgame between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The next few days were a blur for me in my sadness. In March of 2004 I had met and served Vinnie and Darrell Abbott at my place of work in Addison, Texas. They were fresh from a recording session of some sort. Both were enjoying an adult beverage. I thought nothning about that chance encounter until I turned on the news this day in 2004. In a concert under a new band name Damageplan, some crazed person who was more sympathetic to the Pantera tradition took issue with the band and starting shooting. Darrell 'Dimebag' Abbott would lose his life this day. Talk about a Texas institution! The following admission of pain comes from a different source. One that I rarely if ever will admit to a friend much less a fan. This thought was permeating my brain throughout the course of the afternoon Sunday while I was placating fans of the Dallas Cowboys with booze and food. Out of the corner of my eye I watched and for 54 minutes I was thinking this. It kills me to make the admission, but now I must share. I thought the Cowboys played a complete game and were Super Bowl worthy. Ow, did that hurt! Hell, I admit that I did not believe that the Cobwoys had any chance in hell of even playing the Steelers as close as they did. You had an injured punt return guy, a birthday boy who wasn't getting the ball enough, a secondary that was taking a beating, weather conditions that were un-Texaslike, yet there was America's team, mere minutes away from a HUGE road win. In my mind I was thinking this was how the Giants got it going against the Pats last December before catching momentum and fire. I even thought to myself that the 2008 Gianst are the 2007 Cowboys. Maybe they too burn out too soon. I played all these scenarios in my head, and then... Not once but TWICE there was miscommunication between Tony Romo and Jason Witten. This led to a costly interception that led to a game scoring touchdown by Deshea Townsend, and the last pass ended the Cowboys chances. Yet, by virtue of what the Saints did at home against the Falcons, Dallas today would have the second wild card! Amazing. This Cowboy team is wounded, beat up, and for some now left for dead. In losing 20-13 at Pittsburgh, that clinched the NFC East for the N.Y. Giants who lost to Philly earlier in the day. My guess is that maybe the Giants rest a bunch of starters and give Dallas a chance to win at home Sunday night on NBC. It also appears the Giants have a bunch of banged up starters as well in the running department. Once again the Dallas season shal ride on one game. If they win, the Cowboys control their destiny. If they lose, we can blame Dcember. A month that has been very unfriendly to North Texas since 1997. In closing I must sit with wonder...For all the injuries that Texas team had going in and to stil be that competitive? Yeah, I saw Super Bowl potential for the first 54 minutes. Then I remenbered the importance of closing out a game. Something that has been an issue in Dallas for some time. Bring in New York. The next to last game in Texas Stadium. Colder weather is coming to North Texas. Real Cold! Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/07/08: Happy Birthday Terrell Owens! I begin by saluting all the men and women who were on the battles lines when the bombing in Pearl Harbor went down this day in 1941. To all of you who have served or have loved ones who do so, I give you this moment. The world sure was a more different place on this day in 1941 when the way you got your news was by way of the radio or newspaper... Having followed pro football for many many years, it always amazes me just how quickly the weeks fly by when football season commences. That's high school, college, and pro. Equally amazing are the things that happen on the gridiron when the calendar reaches December. Teams that are in the playoff hunt have to close the deal on the regular season, teams that have nothing to play for can partake in the spoiler role. Weather is the biggest factor in determining the outcome of games. In a sport where you start training camp in 100 degree heat in July to finish in the frozen tundra of December, the many bounces within a 16 game schedule can make for a bumpy ride. The last time the Dallas Cowboys visited Pittsburgh was 1997. This day a cold windy 25 degree day is what shall await them. Can the Cowboys overcome the #1 ranked defense of the Steelers? My guess is no. Does a Cowboy defeat write of their season? Not necessarily. As the Falcons go, so go the Cowboys. As tough as the regular season finishes, to back in as a 9-7 season is not what Dallas wants to have happen. If the Steelers win their game today, that clinches the NFC East for the Giants before their visit to Dallas next Sunday night. Another Pennsylvania team has an outside chance at keeping things interesting if the Cowboys fall today. The Eagles would only be a half game behind Dallas when the season ends in Philly on December 28th. The Cardinals and Titans can clinch divisions with victories this day. I also wonder just how the Jets will do in the Bay area. The Buffalo Bills and Dolphins invade hockey country in the name of Toronto for a late game this day. If the Dolphins can do the unthinkable and win-This was after all where Ricky Williams played for the CFL-Miami will have improved their win total by 800%! You may as well call them the South Beach Cowboys. Bill Parcells knows what he is doing with the personnel alongside Tony ( I want to say Soprano) Sparano! Miami has an outside chance at a wild card. A great season nonetheless. Pick of the week: Take the Chiefs (+9) to cover if not win against the Denver Broncos. Tony Gonzalez has been one busy receiver the last 4 weeks in K.C. Manny Pacquiao was one tough Filipino fighter! I was impressed at his prowess in the 8 round TKO he was awarded over an aging and done Oscar De La Hoya. One tough lefty, onegood fighter. Congrats to Manny for a fight well done. Despite a poor pay-per-view crowd in house and at home, the people whom I served were ready for some boxing. Of course there was one problem. A Big 12 Title Game... Only in the South will you deal with people who bitch, whine, and complain when their game's sound is moved from their team to a different game/event. I have seen Aggie fans piss and moan in the final two minutes of a 77-0 blowout when the game was long decided, DEMNADING that sound remain up for their game. The same applies for fans of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, LSU... One person, one very drunk and stupid female, felt it was in her best interest to run off at the mouth with more expletives than what you may find at a Tourette's convention when our coverage switched from the Sooner Blowout to Vegas boxing. It was my pleasure to kick her out of the building (and thanking her for reminding me why I continue to remain sober). She won't remember a damn thing come the morning I am sure... Baseball Winter meetings will begin tomorrow. Locally the Rangers state they will not be in the market for any big names. If anything they will seek a trade or three for more pitching. So we are being told... Rumors of Ben Sheets coming to the Rangers will remain only that as the media loves to stir up a story with local residents. Bowl games are pretty much set and ready. Jan 8th it will be Florida and Oklahoma to meet for the BCS title. Jan 2nd Texas Tech and Ole Miss will play in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. Jan 5th Texas and Ohio State will play one another. I'll stop right there. Happy Football viewing! Time to go to work! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/06/08: Tis the weekend, the first of the final month of the soon to be gone year. 2008 will be a year that held many lessons good and bad. While finishing on a strong note personally, I await the arrival of 2009 and starting off many projects on a clean slate. During the day Friday I was wondering why it was that there were four helicopters hovering over the new Cowboys stadium for almost an hour yesterday as I was completing my afternoon walk. I soon got my answer. Apparently the final piece that was to be added to the outer structure of the 1.3 billion palace(so far) was completed. Anything to make Jerry Jones look good. Even when his team doesn't. It was a noisy afternoon in Arlington as the sun was about to go down. I have often commented on just how much I respect the accessibility of hockey players off the ice. I got to watch another fine example of that last night at the AAC. In a game that the Dallas Stars were 55.5 seconds short of a shutout, Colorado's Marek Svatos nets a game tying goal with a 6th attacker to force an overtime and a shootout. This was where Marty Turco came alive. As Mike Ribeiro and Mike Modano hit urgent shootout scores, Marty Turco came up huge for a 2-1 Dallas victory! Once the game ended the Turk gave a young fan his goalie stick! Being fully aware of how personal an athletes belongings are, this act of random generosity struck me as epic! Four wins in 6 games for the Stars. Now at the #13 slot. Plenty of time to play catchup. Four day respite before the Coyotes and Red Wings come to Dallas. Detroit at one point in November had a record of 14-1-1! They are the defending champions. Two games to keep an eye on in college football. If the Trojans win, they return to the Rose Bowl for the 3rd time in 4 years. Should Virginia Tech win their game with Boston College, then you can expect a visit to the Orange Bowl. Fed-Ex Bowl I might add... With all that I have read about this DeLaHoya-Pacquiao buildup, one thing continues to come to mind. Like a right handed batter trying to adjust to a lefthander throwing a curve, my guess is that if Oscar cannot protect himself from the southside jab, it could be a short night for the elder Oscar. I hope the fight goes the full 12 rounds. Once upon a time I was quite the fan. Go back to the days of 1976-1982. one of my most memorable fights was when Alexis Arguello and Aaron Pryor stood toe to toe in the ring mere weeks around the tragic death of Duk-Koo-Kim when he fought Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini. High school football resumes this weekend in North Texas. One matchup to keep an eye on will be Euless Trinity and Allen. Congrats to the Celina Bobcats as they continue their winning ways. The tradition of winning in that great city has been something I learned about 14 years ago in Seattle, Wa. DO NOT BE SURPRISED when the Detroit Lions and ex-Vike Daunte Culpepper find their 1st win of the year at the hands of Minnesota. The Lions have a history of making life tough for team Purple at home. I still think back to a December 1977 Saturday night when Eddie Payton, brother of Walter, ran my boys into the ground on a kickoff and a punt return off the leg of Neil Clabo. If the Lions lose, they will match the Bucs of 1976, the Saints of 1980, the Colts of 1986, and the Dolphins of 2007 as teams who began a season 0-13. May the Mavs continue their winning ways against Joe Johnson and company tonight. Time to work an all-nighter! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/05/08: Happy Friday. I hope the holiday season is treating you well and ably. Pal Greg had a fantabulous time in Canada, as he cannot wait to get back for the next roadie the Stars take. He was a little shocked at how much media coverage Sean Avery's comments received in the Great White North. A 6 game suspension was handed hown by Gary Bettman for Sean's comments. I am a little surprised by this. Avery is now going to go through anger management for his issues. Even so, when all is said and done, you can pretty much write off Sean Avery's time in Dallas. To hear Brett Hull and Dave Tippett speak, Sean is dead. The price one pays to be an individual in a team game. I'm just saying... No one here locally is giving the Cowboys much of a chance to do much of anything in Steelertown. Can you blame them? Since 1997, the Cowboys usually run a record of 2-2 or 1-3. When you look at the remaining three games after Pittsburgh, I must say the chances of falling to 8-8 are pretty good. Marion Barber WILL NOT play. DeMarcus Ware is also a game time decision. Best of luck to Tashard Choice and to a happy birthday to T.O. as Sunday he will turn 35. I like the Steelers to win going away... Saturday's night's Oklahoma-Missouri matchup will be a chance for history. No team has ever put a 60 spot on the boards five straight games. Look for the Sooners to do so and do not be surprised if Tim Tebow and the Gators pull off an upset, further whetting the argument appetite of a back-to-back Heisman winner. The first since Archie Griffin in 1974-75. Also Saturday night there will be a boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. My place of work will feature it on a pay-per-view basis. I will be working it and missing my first Mavs game of the season against the Atlants Hawks. Quite a few complaining to me privately that they find the Mavs style of play 'boring'. To which I say, 'Winning, near 1st place, and boring? Do Tell!' Dallas' win over the Suns Thursday was a cakewalk! Shaq looked old, Nash looked hurried, the system of Mike D looked like it was needed, and the Terry Porter style of defense appeared unpopular. Thanks to Joe for the ticket. It was a treat to run into former Mr. Olympia Ron Coleman after the game. What a nice young man! Warmer weather returns if only for the weekend. The Avalanche of Colorado in town tonight. I look forward to a good fight. If the Stars win, we are out of the #15 spot and things begin to look up! Time for a walk! Have a great weekend! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/04/08: Happy Birthday St.Barbara of biblical history! Happy anniversary to sis in matrimonial speak. Yesterday the high at noon in North Texas was 77. This morning at dawn the low dropped to 33 as the winds roared from the north. The cooler weather will stay in place through the weekend. Thankfully no allergies this time around. The last time the Edmonton Oiles enjoyed a regular season win over the Dallas Stars prior to last night? January 20th 2004! A span of almost five years. Mike Modano provided the necessary spark for the Stars after falling behind 3-0 to bring the game to 3-2 with 100 seconds left in regulation. Then an empty netter on a poor pass and an added gravy shot courtesy of a good pass from the point propelled the Oilers to a 4-2 victory. Shawn Horcoff got the scoring started at Rexall Place. The Oiler win also snapped a seven game skid against the Stars. Sean Avery has apologized for his comments Tuesday. Later today he shall learn his fate by Gary Bettman as to how much suspension time he gets. Sean will not play another game for Dallas. Based on comments made by Dave Tippett and players I am reading between the lines. I predict he goes back to Los Angeles and continues to do well in the field of fashion design... Phoenix Suns in town tonight. Shaq is scheduled to play. They'll be on a back to back, fresh from a win in New Orleans. I remember how much of a fight they gave us 12/21/07 with Amare Stoudamire and Leandro Barbosa making shots from everywhere on the field. The Mavs won that night but I recall they almost blew a double digit lead in doing so. Oh yes, and Steve Nash was dong his usual routine of point and shoot. Defensively, this team misses the lessons of Mikey D. Dallas should get a W tonight. I will be there, camera at the ready. Looking forward to what Greg had to say about his visits to Calgary and Edmonton. Great hockey towns where Steve Avery was the news of the day for 48 hours straight. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/03/08: Happy Early Wednesday morning to you! Happy Birthday to the 'Prince of $%#^ing darkness Ozzy Ozborne Tuesday night in Dallas was nothing short of exciting. Sort of like the weather blowing hot and cold, last night marked the first time in 2008 that the Dallas Mavericks went ABOVE .500 in a game they won after trailing for the first forty seven minutes. Further north toward Calgary way, the Dallas Stars won their second straight game for the first time since February 26th of this year. And we had a Plaxico Burress moment (of the mouth) courtesy of Sean Avery...Which way do we go? Back on November 9th, the Dallas Mavericks were on the road trying to adjust to a new coach, a new system, and being able to close out a 4th quarter. They also happened to be in Los Angeles playing the Clippers. Two days removed from a heartbreaking single digit road loss at Denver, on this day the Mavericks were able to tie the game up at 78 before Los Angeles-Baron Davis and company-exploded for a 15-0 run to get a huge win over the still struggling Mavericks. Last night, for the first 47 minutes and 10 seconds, at no time did the Mavericks have a lead or even a tie. Once again Baron Davis, Zach Randolph, and Marcus Camby was giving Dirk, Kidd, and family a really tough time. Less than five minutes left, Dallas was down by 15. Then it happened. The Jet began to roar, Jason Kidd began to dish and dash, Dirk began hitting fadeaways, then JJ Barea hits a dramatic three to give Dallas an exciting 100-98 victory. I was down on the floor and there were alot of excited and happy Mavs and fans. In securing their seventh win in eight tries, The Mavs stopped Mike Dunleavy's bunch on the final six possessions! An absolute reversal of what transpired when the Mavs lost a heartbreaker to Orlando by a 2 point margin. Six more games on this current homestand, the longest since 1998. I foresee Dallas going 5-2 or maybe 6-1. With Houstons Tracy McGrady out three weeks with knee problems, this should bode well for Dallas. The Phoenix Suns are next up on Thursday. I will be there for an early 7pm start...The highlight of my night was running into former pro wrestler 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams. He could not believe how much I remembered about his career... Mere hours after Sean Avery wanted to bemoan his stud-stable status and open his mouth, the Dallas Stars and Marty Turco played perhaps the best game of their young and struggling season. Turk made 36 of 37 stops, Darryl Sydor, Mark Janik, new arrival Hutchinson, Mark Parrish, and team put forth a heroic effort defensively in setting back the Flames of Calgary 3-1. Louie Erikkson and Fabian Brunnstrom scored epic goals in securing an exciting win for the boys from Big D. Call it a must win if you want, the Stars appear to be snapping out of their doldrums in winning their third of four games. Later today the back-to-back continues with a visit to the Rexall Center and a meetup with the Edmonton Oilers. A Stars win and all of a sudden that 15 ranking may become a thing of the past. Just in time for a visit by the Colorado Avalanche! If Elisha Cuthbert and Dion Phaneuf are happy, then so be it! It isn't sloppy or second to either one of them! Do not expect to see Sean Avery back anytime soon for the Stars after an indefinite suspension handed down by the league. Maybe he can give fashion tips to athletes who insist on bringing a gun to a nightclub. This also leads us to a new dictionary term from the Master: Plaxident! When you screw up so bad it costs you 30 million dollars. Once again the weather here in North Texas is about to go Star/Maverick...warm to cold to warm to cold again tonight. Time to go grab some firewood. Three weeks until X-Mas. Have you started your shopping yet? Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/02/08: Happy Birthday Britney Spears! The decision was swift and to the point. Plaxico Burress suspended four games and placed on leave for the remainder of 2008 for his actions, or lack therof, with what transpired last Thanksgiving weekend. I know of thirty million things that Mr. Burruss will have to ponder as his career as a New York Giant for all intents and purposes is done. Where he goes next is anyones guess... Man that Sage Rosenfels sure is a guaranteed stomach churner whenever he touches the football! I harken back to early in the season when a sure victory over the Colts becomes back-to-back turnovers and a Texan defeat. Last night, the first appearance for Houston on a Monday nighter, bode well for the defense of Mario Williams and ex-Cowboy Jacques Reeves. Rosenfels at one point was deflected and dropped three plays in a row. The Texans would hold off the hapless Jags of Jacksonville to improve to 5-7. Of course that halftime interview with Drew Rosenhaus was one for the ages. 'Next Question' became 'I cannot comment on the specifics of the case, as you can understand.' Anything for face time Drew, and good luck trying to salvage and safeguard the next contract Plax decides to sign... My friend Greg is taking the two game road trip to Calgary and Edmonton to watch the Stars play. Hopefully playing to victory. Lord knows Marty Turco loves to perform well in Canada! Don't ask me why. Sunday's game sure brought back memories of 2000-2001 in terms if being resilient and unafraid to be aggressive and opportunistic. I am hopeful that Mike Modano can continue to take on the role of leader and starter as Dallas tries to continue to climb up the ladder in the standings. The only way to go now is up! Congrats to Dustin Pedroia. Now a signed Red Sox infielder through 2014 with an option on 2015. That will keep the Nation happy win or lose. I love the kid's grit, determination, and heart. He is well worth the 40 million dollar investment. Even if the Dallas Cowboys can go 2-2 in December, that will not guarantee a playoff run. Both the Falcons, Buccaneers, and Panthers have easier opponents to deal with in the next four weeks. Dallas gets to handle the Steelers, Ravens, Giants, and Eagles. I hope I'm wrong but my guess is that the Cowboys will be lucky to go 1-3 in December. A month that has been a bugaboo here in Texas since 1996, or since Rowdy became the official mascot of the Cowboys. Maybe it's a Rowdy curse! I'm just saying. IF the Cowboys can pull off a miracle and defeat Pittsburgh this Sunday, then I believe we will see a memorable Chrustmas run... Mavs at 7:30 against the hapless 3-13 Clippers. Stars in Calgary tonight at 8:30. Will catch the 3rd period once I get home. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 12/01/08: Happy Monday, happy final month of 2008, and happy holiday push to the new year. I hope it is a memorable one for you... In nineteen days we will begin the process of getting bowled over. The next 20 days will then be an orgy of gridiron action leading up to the BCS title game on January 8th. That will also coincide with the beginning of the NFL playoffs. A great time of year if you like football. Here in the South, it can get overwhelming. I have come to like it. Of interest to note. This year the Cotton Bowl will occur on January 2nd instead of the first. No ten am kickoff either. This time it will be a 1pm start with Texas Tech to duel Ole Miss. A good matchup from where I sit. All the talk at work continues to be how the Longhorns got screwed by the computers. I have heard enough, get over it! Yesterday's Stars win was huge! Mike Modano has a history of breaking the collective heart of the Edmonton Oilers and their fans. Sunday at the 17:39 mark of the 3rd period, Mikey's goal was the game winner after Marty Turco had a boo-boo in the crease. Second game in a row that the Oilers fell behind 2-0, came back to tie, only to lose it. Duane Roloson did not start. Not that it would have made a difference. This was a game Dallas wanted to make a statement after not showing up on Friday night with the vicious fishes. Things around the blue line appeared to be stronger and tighter. It also appeared that Darryl Sydor has free run of the defensive shifts as he was dictating when his line and the line of Neal would switch off. I almost did not recognize Sheldon Souray. He has grown his hair good and long since the All-Star game was played here and he was a Canadien. Still a force on the ice. He spelled the injured Parisi nicely. Dallas held on 4-3. The Mavericks will now begin a long homestand of seven straight games! Last time you saw that was over ten years ago. A chance for Rick Carlisle's team to gain some ground and get above .500! I hope to be at each game and look forward to seeing more offense and transition. Devean George will start Tuesday with injury having bitten Antoine Williams. First victim: The L.A. Clippers! Go Mavs! I foresee a long suspension for Plaxico... Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr. Will
11/30/08: As we now have one month remaining in the 2008 year, one can already imagine all the hate mail being sent to the powers that be who handle the BCS computer rankings. Fresh off an election what the rankings really mean to tell us is that Texas had the popular vote while Oklahoma carried the electoral votes. Texas Tech was the viable write-in candidate. Three Big 12 teams with only one loss and the Sooners get the nod as predicted. Texas gets screwed and I actually like what Mike Leach's idea for a resolution is. Select the best school for overall academics. Oh, wait! That doesn't help Baylor now does it? Tech's near loss to Baylor came at a price as Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree sustained injuries. Same for Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. What a leapfrog he sustained when hit out of bounds short of the goal line right before the half! The Sooners pulled away to win by twenty. While I feel bad for the Longhorns and their great fans, I empathize with their lack of BCS approval. Who the hell needs home cooking in the NFL when road teams can go 10-2. Only the third time home teams have played so badly. Two major eggs laid in New York and New England! 30 unanswered points by the Steel Crew. Some pass catching theatrics in Green Bay courtesy of Steve Smith. Thank God for Bernard Berrian! After 25 years of watching that damn run by Tony Dorsett (99 yards... and a half!) on my Vikings, it was nice to see Minnesota become the 11th team to go that distance on a pass play. Big win on the Bears 34-14, claiming to the NFC North by a game. Even with the sceanario building up with Plaxico Burress and Antonio Pierce, the Giants had no trouble getting to 11-1 with a resounding 23-7 victory over the Washington Redskins. The capitol loss allows the Cowboys to remain in the wild-card chase albeit behind the Panthers, Buccaneers, and Falcons. I am guessing Burress will not play anymore in 2008 and face a harsher sentence from Roger Goodell once his trial and verdict are up. My only question is: If going to a club, wouldn't you rather hit a place where you can be anonymous or is thug life all that you want to associate with? Antonio Pierce may need a lawyer before all is said and done. He tried to hide the gun... With the 49ers traveling east for a 10-6 victory the NFC/AFC West now a collective 1-11. Ouch! The Stars in Dallas own a 22-4 record against the Edmonton Oilers. The badly beaten and bruised Stars will try to mix things up and hope for good results. This will include a line that consists of Mike Modano on the wing and Brad Richards buffeting him. No chance of Dave Tippett getting fired. A collecive vote of confidence has been given by both Brett Hull and Les Jackson. He has seen too much, mind you. Details on the game tomorrow. First time this year we hear 'Oh Canada' from Celena Rae... I hope the 4 day holiday treated you well. Say hello to December and to holiday magic. Time for a walk! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 11/29/08: Happy Saturday. The final weekend of November as title games begin to get determined collegiately. End of season rivalries may play a part in who gets a Bowl game. Bowl games, depending on which one you are awarded, can pay a university handsomely. All that rigamarole shall commence on December 20th and end on January 8th for the BCS championship game. Maybe Elvis will make a special appearance as it will be his 75th birthday... A few games of interest locally are Georgia-Georgia Tech and Missouri-Kansas. Former Texas performers Chase Daniels and Matt Stafford have alumni already knocked out of the high school scene (gratuitous mention of Southlake and Highland Park). Next week all eyes will be on the Big 12 Title game to determine who will represent next month. Seven years in the Northwest, once having attended the Apple Cup. I regret never having attended the Civil War with Oregon-Oregon State. If the Beavers win, a rematch with Penn State shall be imminent. A loss leaves the door open for USC...IF they can handle crosstown rival UCLA next week in their finale... If Oklahoma wins big on the Cowboys tonight in Stillwater, look for Oklahoma to leapfrog Texas for the right to battle Missouri next week in Kansas. Also imagine how the Longhorns will feel knowing that the two Big 12 finalists are two teams they had defeated in the regular season! Final twist to the plot: Wouls it be so bad if we saw a rematch of Texas-USC in another bowl matchup? This is what I am looking at. Look for Texas Tech to wrap up the Cotton Bowl bid with a win today over the Baylor Bears. Yearbook night at the AAC, your #1 rival San Jose in town, a packed house and a chanec at a 2 game winning streak...and you lay an absolute egg! Marty Turco pulled after two periods when the Sharks jumped out to a 4-1 lead. It increased to 6-1 before scoring an excuse me goal late. A chance to create some good juju turns to bad jello as the Sharks show why they are so deadly. Two off season additions helped to shore up the D. Rob Blake being one of them. Two early goals by Dan Boyle allowed San Jose to crack the 41 point mark in wins. Quite a switch from seven months ago when Dallas had a memorable 4 overtime victory. Sergei Zubov looked like he may habe reaggravated his groin and will be out again for maybe a week. 21 points back dead last in the cellar. Who shall be the candle to light a flame out of the slump doldrums of underproduction? Stay tuned! The Oilers in town Sunday night. I will be there with camera at the ready. Damn Mavericks! Why is it so hard for them to close out an L.A. team? Back on November 9th a 15-0 Clipper run doomed the team to a 4th quarter collapse. Back on 11/11 the Lakers pull away with a huge Kobe run en route to a seven point victory at the AAC. Last night after shooting 63% in the first half, an eleven point 3rd quarter lead evaporated into a Laker 21-2 run. Time after time Devean George was getting beaten in the paint, Bryant gets wizardlike, and Dallas starts clanging on the rim. Deja-vu for the Mavs as they fall to the Lakers by a 106-99. Andrew Bynum and Derek Fisher prove to be a hazardous for Damp, Diop, Dirk, and defense. A five game win streak now goes by the boards. Mavs will try to snap back to victory later today in Sacramento. Look for Andy Pettite to wind up with Joe Torre in Los Angeles. Pet had a great rapport with Sir Joseph and will enjoy being back in the National League. Manny Ramirez keeps hinting that returning as a Yankee would be worth tweaking the Beantowners. I actually think Mark Teixeira will remain an Angel. Can you imagine Tex and A-Rod in the same clubhouse? It didn't work in Texas, it sure as hell won't work in New York. Time for a walk then off to work. Plaxico Burress, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?! Over and out in Big D Mr Will 11/28/08: As a light rain falls and a thunder booms in the distance, I was awakened at 5am for whatever reason. Never have I made the choice to awaken so early and to go shopping on Black Friday, the busiest retail day of the year! I also had no idea just how frenetically crazy the people, the product and the lines can get. While visiting sis in Mansfield yesterday it occurred to me just how far along technology has come. My only beef with this is that once you buy something, within a year the product is obsolete and outdated and available at one third the price! It was also revealed by sis as we watched 'Hancock' on the DVD screen that Charlize Theron could make her one day go lesbian. That elicited quite a laugh within the household. Let me start by saying those of you who like a good clusterfudge, just go to Walmart at 5 am. I dare say that waiting in line at the DMV would take lesser time than what I witnessed this morning. They had deals up the wazoo, namely 2 dollar DVD's that were snatched up like yesterday's news. Ipods, MP3's, and Blu-Rays were flying off the shelf. It's too bad the shoppers in the building had no clue how to conduct themselves with their kids or with their carts. Think 'Hancock' on the freeway and you get my drift. After 36 hours without a Venti Mocha, I was ready to do some storegazing once I reloaded. Right by the house there was a Best Buy. Traffic not quite as crazy at 6 this morning, and the staff was beyond attentive. Every 3-6 minutes I had an attendant swing by and ask if 'I was doing okay and had any questions?'. Noting the swing in the economy and the need for urgency I was cool with that. Not pressured, actually matter of fact. I made a few observations: 1.DVD camcorders and HDD camcorders cost next to nothing. Compared to what I paid for a camcorder in 2001, this was highway robbery. Shows just how out of the loop I happen to be. 2.Under 300 for the I-Phone, that one where you keep using your index finger and thumb to make things bigger, wider, smaller, and to switch from left to right in one fell swoop. A 40% drop from one year ago. 3.Acer laptops look to be a popular item at under 400 dollars. 2 gig memory and 150 gig of space seem like plenty of room for me. The geek next to me said 'go higher if you do alot of photos and video shoots'. 4.DVD classics from year's past for just three dollars. 'A Beautiful Mind' and '300' looked to be popular. 5.MP3's and Ipods that hold up to 120 Gig of space! On the MP3 i noted that you could have up to 375 hours of video. Isn't that like 120-125 movies if you stay away from the "Lord of The Rings' time frame? Amazing! and 5a.Good God, those Samsung 32 inch LCD's were affordable! Two and half hours later, under a steady rainfall that looked like Seattle, I was ready to head back home and blog about this. With everything about to go digital in 82 days, it occurs to me that I have some serious catching up to do. With a few ideas in place, I have a plan that hopefully I can make work! I commend the good people of the Best Buy on Collins Road and the I30 in Arlington. They were professional all the way. They may very well get my business again after seven years away. To those of you who actually stayed up all night to get a deal at JC Penny's. Walmart, Grapevine Mills Mall, or any other outlet in Texas and the U.S. I applaud you. This old man can only handle so much on a turkey and pumpkin pie hangover. Be safe and |
